Murray & Roberts wins N4 Road upgrade tender
The Trans African Concessions (Trac) has awarded a 22 months contract for the upgrade of N4 Toll road connecting Mozambique to South Africa to Murray & Roberts Infrastructure (MRI).
The Project Manager for MRI Derk Brink noted that work on the road upgrading project will begin east of Rockdale Interchange and end west of Arnot Interchange located in Mpumalanga.
Work on the N4 Toll road upgrade includes construction of a new double-lane eastbound carriageway, which will help increase the capacity of the section of road which is 18km. There would also be construction of an overpass bridge at the Klein Olifants river, minor renovation on existing bridges and the construction of six large on site culverts and drainage works.
Brink further noted that necessary environmental management plans had been put in place so far to facilitate the road upgrade project. In addition, MRI had reconfigured the section of road into a three lanes carriageway.
The new carriageways will have a 40mm thick asphalt pavement layer, while the rehabilitation of the westbound carriageway will have 13.2mm single seal layer.
The Trans African Concessions (Trac) will be in possession of the road till its 30 year concession expires in 2017. The transfer will then go to Mozambique and South Africa who will have a joint ownership. Completion of the road upgrade is expected to be in 2016.
